Every year, thousands of family members are separated by conflicts, disasters or migration. People suffer terribly when they lose contact with their loved ones and don't know where they are or whether they are safe.

The Gambia Red Cross Society and International Committee of Red Cross work together to locate people and put them back into contact with their relatives. This work includes
looking for family membersrestoring contactreuniting families, exchanging messages and seeking to clarify the fate of those who remain missing.

People need to know the whereabouts and fate of their love ones, the Gambia Red Cross strives to actively trace missing persons within and outside the country to establish communication through the Restoring Family Links services thereby bridging the gap of miscommunication.

The most common situations where the Family Links Network takes action are when loss of contact is due to armed conflict or other situations of violence; natural or man-made disaster; migration and in other situations of humanitarian need.  In these cases, example during wars and migration, people detained are given privileges to keep in touch with their families while in detention centers.

The ICRC Regional Delegation in Dakar has been forwarding cases from other national Societies and the tracing begins and this is facilitated through the transmission of Red Cross Message forms to bridge the gap of mis-communication between separated family members.

The Gambia Red Cross offers phone calls services mostly for migrants repatriated from Libya who were stranded in detention centers and Psychosocial services, referral service to seek medical treatment and family reunification. While for those in European countries, the most common services is extending Salamats, distributing Red Cross Messages, Tracing  and assistance (transport refund) for migrants in distress among others services. These services give hope to relatives to know the fate of their love ones.

The RFL services are freely available for all at both National Office and all offices in the seven (7) regions of The Gambia.
