Disaster preparedness refers to measures taken to prepare for and reduce the effects of disasters. That is, to predict and where possible, prevent them, mitigate their impact on vulnerable populations. The Gambia Red Cross Society joins the IFRC in working with the three main strategies on reducing risks. These are: to strengthen the preparedness capacities of communities to help them to be in a better position to respond to disasters. This will help them to have the required knowledge and know the necessary actions to take in mitigating the risks of disasters. Preparedness is directly linked to Risk Reduction as preparedness activities lead to disaster risk reduction.

GRCS is making a significant impact in the communities in trying to reduce the vulnerability level of people and improving their lives. In recent years, GRCS has worked in partnership with the World Food Program (WFP) and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) in promoting DRR activities in schools and communities. These were done in the form of community trainings and sensitization activities. Such activities have helped to raise the DRR awareness level of community members and thus contributing to the reduction of potential impacts of hazards.
